Test and Inspection

JL Electrical offer a variety of test and inspection services from portable appliance testing to periodic test and inspection reports for domestic, commercial and industrial customers.

Our main areas of test and inspection are listed as follows:

General Inspection and health check

  • Carry out a visual inspection of the electrical installation, which is to include mains distribution equipment, by removing or opening all switches, MCB boards, contactors, busbars etc., and to examine for signs of excessive heat or deterioration through discolour or loose connections.
  • Carry out a visual electrical inspection by walking around the location, examining for breakages, excessive use of extension leads etc.
  • Mechanically test RCD's, to see they are operating correctly.
  • Ensure that the location has an adequate first aid kit and fire blanket
  • Carry out a visual electrical inspection of general equipment, which can be agreed upon as required.

Periodic Inspection and Testing

  • As above carry out a thourough visual inspection of the electrical installation.
  • External fault current testing
  • Insulation Resistance testing
  • Earth loop impedance testing (external and internal)
  • RCD time testing
  • Record results and reccomended remiedial work on NAPIT test sheet

Portable Appliance Testing

JL Electrical offers a service in Portable Appliance Testing (or PAT testing). We use only fully trained competent engineers, using calibrated testing equipment.

Utilising JL Electrical, a professionally trained contractor, to provide your appliance testing is an advantage to you as our engineers have an in-depth knowledge of which appliances will need testing, the classification type of electrical equipment and the knowledge of  the required frequency of  testing and inspection for those items. Appliances generally need to be tested between three months to five years depending on the business type and equipment in use.

The Government stresses the need for PAT testing in the new 'Fire Safety Risk Assessment - Offices and Shops' which states among other references to electrics:

'If portable electrical equipment is used, including items brought into a workplace by staff, then your fire risk assessment should ensure that it is visually inspected and undergoes portable appliance testing ('PAT') at intervals suitable for the type of equipment and its frequency of use (refer to HSE guidance).'

Thermal Imaging Survey

Thermal surveys can help your business identify if there is any part of your electrical system that is overheating which could pose a risk to the safety of your business.

It is a safe, non-intrusive and non-contact form of survey that can identify problems that may be lurking under the surface, invisible to the naked eye. If there are any defects that are present within your systems a thermal imaging survey will find it.

A thermal imaging survey can help to locate if any faults are starting to emerge and shows the surveyor a visual image of the temperature of all the electrical and mechanical systems in your business. As the amount of radiation emitted by an object increases with temperature a thermal survey allows the surveyor to see variations in temperature

Emergency Lighting Testing

An emergency exit lighting system should cover each exit door, escape routes, stairways, windowless rooms, fire alarm call points and lifts.

The exterior of exits should also be lit as well as the emergency exit signs, fire fighting equipment and any machinery that would need to shut down in a crisis. Whatever the type of emergency lighting system you have installed we will give your system a periodic inspection as part of our regular testing and maintenance service.

There are two main tests that are usually carried out.

The function test in which the emergency lighting system is tested by breaking the supply to the lights and checking that they still work. This test should be performed monthly.

Secondly, there is the discharge test where the system is tested to its limit to check it is operating as required. This should be performed annually.

We will test your system to make sure that should the need arise your emergency lighting system will lead your staff to safety.
